There has been a lot of well known resistance to MP3 playing phones, but the acceptance of integrated digital cameras has been nothing short of a phenomenon. The results have never been as good as a dedicated device, but that might be about to change.

Available now, the Sharp 903 from Vodafone will churn out photographs at an incredible 3.2 megapixels and while we have seen seven and even eight megapixel cameras touted around China and Japan, this is by far the highest spec to have reached these shores.

Perhaps just as important as the increased rating, is the fact that the 903 will have a 2x optical zoom, since the digital zoom ranks alongside the chocolate fireguard and solar torch in a list of pants inventions. An SD card slot is fitted for all those size heavy shots and the 903 will feature the same, mildly freaky, swivelling screen as the 902. It’s also 3G.

Now, given these features, it was always likely – nay guaranteed – that the 903 would turn out to be a bit of a brick. Well, it is and at 10.9 x 5 x 2.9cm and weighing 148g it is actually bigger (though 1g lighter) than its monstrous forebear. I’ve seen smaller smartphones.

Prices for the 903 will range from a whopping £350 to free depending on whether you have a sensible or utterly silly 12 month contract. Vitally, however, the 903 has broken new ground and we can expect more athletic competition to soon follow in its trampled path.
