Antivirus granddaddy Symantec is now publicly trialling its latest initiative: Symantec Mobile Security for Symbian.

The nicely unambigous title saves me having to spell out the its obvious functionality, while the first beta is available for free here and supports all Symbian Series 60 and 80 platforms. Confusingly, Symantec only specifically mentions the Nokia 6260, 6600, 6620, 6630, 6670, 7610, 9300 and 9500 phones but it covers all brands.

Looking at the package more closely (Symantec stresses that only the basic functionality of the finished product is currently running) it supports antivirus and firewall protection, and can be configured remotely by an administrator to pick up virus definitions and product updates either directly from the Symantec LiveUpdate servers (obviously through a wireless Internet connection) or from an internal network.

Having fevered away at this project for some time in its San Antonio lair (see above), Symantec's timing is pretty good given the increasing spread of MMS transmitted CommWarrior and Bluetooth based Cabir viruses to mobile devices. Not to mention the recent spate of high profile hacks on certain sexually liberated celebrities.

(If you’ve been on Mars the last for the last month, type “Sidekick” into a web browser for the skinny on all that, we refuse to stoop so low... just this once. On the other hand if you manage to hack Kate Beckinsale’s mobile feel free to pass on all details!).

No word yet on when we’ll see this go gold, but hey, while its free who is complaining?
