It was too much to ask that all mobile handset manufacturers take an immediate 12 month sabbatical inline with my pained requests at the end of our 3GSM coverage so I could regain my sanity. In fact, just two weeks later our unspoken agreement has been broken, but it is not without good reason so, although my bitten fingernails and nervous tick remain, it is with utter professionalism that I bring you a smattering of new Sony Ericsson mobiles, including the first branded Walkman phone.

The W800 is the name on everyone’s lips, a candy bar format orange and silver beasty covered with Walkman logos and dedicated music software. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a one trick pony though, it packs some serious functionality.

For a start the W800 can play music with or without the phone being switched on. Switched off, Sony Ericsson claims users will get a whopping 30 hours of music playback on a single charge, 15 hours if the phone is switched on. A 512MB Memory Stick Duo is supplied and it has 38MB of internal memory. A “Direct Music” button will take users straight to their albums. An FM radio is integrated for good measure and, in what I expect will be the first of many accessories, an MMC-60 analogue music cable has been shown off which will allow the W800 to connect to a stereo.

On top of this, there is a whopping two megapixel camera with auto-focus lens, tri-band capability (but not 3G), 176 x 220 pixel, 262k colour screen and Bluetooth. Not being 3G, the size has been kept down to a svelte 100 x 46 x 20.5mm and it weighs just 100g. Two models will be available on release: the W800i and the W800c, but even Sony Ericsson’s website, at the time of press, fails to tell them apart. There is no word on availability or pricing either, with the manufacturer content to tease us with the line: Coming Soon.
