Using the T5 every day is made easier with the Favourites screen, which allows you to create shortcuts to your most used applications and have only them visible. If you’re a business user you’ll also be glad to see Documents to Go present, which lets you edit Word and Excel files as well as viewing PowerPoint presentations. You can also use the T5 as your digital music player thanks to the RealPlayer bundle, and I have to say that the sound quality is surprisingly good.

Despite being palmOne’s high-end PDA, the Tungsten T5 doesn’t ship with a docking cradle in the box. palmOne insists that it’s customers haven’t requested a cradle in the box, although this seems a little strange considering that the original Palm OS product, the Pilot was the device that started the docking cradle trend.

Fitting the T5 into your everyday life shouldn’t be hard – it only weighs 148g and sports dimensions of 120 x 77 x 15mm (HxWxD). If you’re the type of person that likes to carry their PDA in a shirt pocket, this one should fit nicely.

When palmOne launched the Tungsten T5 it announced a price of £329 including VAT, which seemed very high for a device without integrated WiFi or a docking cradle. Thankfully the street prices have proven to be far more reasonable, with one online retailer offering the T5 at £248 including VAT.

There’s a lot that I like about the Tungsten T5, not least its sleek and simple design. Unfortunately there are a few fundamental flaws that hold it back, with the lack of WiFi being the most obvious.

Verdict

The palmOne Tungsten T5 is a beautifully crafted PDA with a great screen – it’s slim, light and generally easy to use. However, the lack of integrated WiFi, convoluted memory management and absence of a docking cradle make it look like poor value compared to the Pocket PC competition.
