We've known about the Archos 9 PCtablet for some time, but now the Windows 7 launch is out of the way (we're great fans, but thank heavens] it has hit store shelves.

Essentially looking to revive the once seemingly dead MID or UMPC category, the Archos 9 is an 800g 17mm thick device with 9in resistive (yep, doh!) touchscreen and Windows 7 OS. Optical trackpoint and left/right mouse buttons are the main exterior buttons since navigation can largely be done onscreen and there is a large virtual keyboard to make use of.

Interestingly, despite its dimensions, the Archos 9 also has some grunt with the Atom Z series processor augmented by some decent (though unspecified) graphics which make it capable of outputting 1080p HD video. To bolster your collection £80 worth of free movies from the Archos Media Club are supplied in box and its 60GB capacity (HDD not SSD) should make for ample storage space.

As for connectivity, WiFi is built in and USB ports mean a 3G dongle can be tethered for online access on the move while good old Ethernet makes an appearance too. Sadly HDMI isn't here, with Archos (strangely) opting for VGA instead.

The Archos 9 PCtablet makes for quite the unique portable PC and since it is essentially equipped like a netbook you'll find its £449.99 RRP largely in the range of premium netbooks too. Roll up, roll up...
