When the going gets rough the handsets get tough...

Motorola has today announced the 'MC55' its smallest and lightest fully ruggedized Enterprise Digital Assistant (EDA) to date. Essentially this is a smartphone targeted at businesses with additional professional functionality. In this case a combination of walkie-talkie, barcode scanner and solid as nails construction.

As is usual for the category this means you'll get the likes of IP54 grade durability so it will withstand dust, water, drops and the elements. As is unusual for this category the device itself is reasonably stylish and comes with a feature set more akin to a BlackBerry than a dull business tool. Consequently 'MC5590' base model (left) has WiFi, GPS, an LED backlit display, Qwerty keyboard, 2MP camera, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and microSD expansion slot all packed in though its GSM/GPRS and EDGE are not backed up by 3G. The choice of a Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system may also chill the blood, but given its target market logically there's no other option right now. Meanwhile the 'MC5574' (right) offers all this plus WWAN to support workers in the field.

As for the walk-talkie functionality, that operates with Motorola's recently launched 'Total Enterprise Access and Mobility' (TEAM) Express functionality. This provides push-to-talk capabilities between MC55 and other enterprise mobility devices including Motorola's CA50 VoIP-enabled wireless scanner, TEAM VoWLAN smartphones and two-way radios. A neat way to cut down the monthly minutes' consumption!

Pricing and availability remains unknown at this stage but if you've long done a job which has negated you the chance to own one of the more swish yet fragile high end smartphones out there then perhaps the Motorola MC55 will now ease the craving...
