Clearly if Apple, Google, O2, RIM and T-Mobile can make an App Store then why can't Palm?

While deemed more a refresh than a revolution by the company itself, the Palm 'Software Store' has gone mobile with an impressive 5,000 apps and games now available directly from handsets themselves. 1,000 of these are said to be available completely free.

Laid out and grouped in a frighteningly similar (if inverted) Apple-manner the Software Store groups content via Games, Entertainment, Tool s & Productivity, Education & Reference, Profession, Finance & Accounting, Travel, Personal Productivity, Medical and Free Apps. Software Store is also available on both Windows Mobile and Palm OS based devices giving the company a one-up on the mooted Microsoft App Store said to be appearing in 2009.

More than 25 Palm handsets will be compatible from launch and owners simply need to install the free Software Store tool to get up and running. As an extra bonus, users will get 25 per cent off their first download when using the voucher code 'SHOPMOBILE'. All seems rather fair to me.

Could Palm at last be getting with the programme (despite its stupidity in not embracing Android) and finally producing competitive products again? Well I wouldn't go that far yet. Still, Palm was once a truly innovative company with top notch handsets and for the good of the smartphone sector we'd hope it can become one once again...
