Fighting against the increasing commoditisation of 3G modems are the ‘MD400' and ‘MD400g' a duo which pack handy M2 and microSD card readers (standards still surprisingly ignored by most dedicated units) and, in the case of the latter, Google Maps compatible GPS. Yes, really.

So while this certainly says a lot about the dwindling cost of GPS chipsets you'll also be glad to know the modems themselves are specced with top end 7.2Mbps downloads and lightening 2Mbps uploads (where the signal allows). Clever design points don't stop there either since the pair sport rugged swivel antennas that fold away neatly while they abandon the typical (and easily lost) cap route in favour of a retractable USB connector.

Bulk? 70 x 28 x 15mm and just 28g.

Windows and Mac OS X compliant, the MD400 and MD400g will ship in a choice of ‘Exquisite Ebony' or ‘Lustrous Black' (!) during Q4 for as yet unspecified prices. I suspect take-up will largely be determined by network adoption, but - potentially daft RRPs aside - they definitely bring something new and rather funky to the party...
