While HTC certainly can make cracking handsets and I expect to bring you confirmation of this stunner later today, it can also make these...

Taking its styling tips from the early nineties is the HTC 'Census' which just passed through technology public glory hole the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The scruffy black and white (no offence to my wonderful NUFC) smart(ish)phone is extremely basic by HTC standards featuring Qualcomm's MSM6500 chipset, a fingerprint reader, EVDO and WiFi and a microSD slot. No mention was made of the screen size (looks about 2.2/2.4in), camera (if indeed there is one?) or more advanced goodies like GPS or HSDPA, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope.

Indeed it seems like the Census - which was once considered for actual use compiling the 2010 US census (ahhh, all becomes clear) - is headed for a fairly dull life stocktaking somewhere deep in the bowels of corporate warehouses which, all in all, is probably for the best.

Expect to hear its first harrowed cries of "ESMERALDA!" sometime in Q3...
