What's all this?

Despite the much discussed notion that RIM is planning a touchscreen iPhone rival (I suspect it still is), the smartphone giant has surprised everyone this week when its very first clamshell device was spotted.

Phone guru Boy Genius Report was behind the breakthrough and not only has it confirmed the existence of the handset but grabbed snaps to boot. Obviously official specs are out of the question here, but what we can ascertain with a certain level of common sense is the love-it-hate-it SureType keyboard is making an appearance along with a large internal LCD (looks 2.4/2.6in to me) and I suspect a secondary smaller display on the outside.

The trackball returns for navigation meaning this definitely isn't a touchscreen handset and I'd surprised if it sported 3G (that debut honour will go to the 9000). BGR understands this radical departure will make its first appearance towards the end of the year and while I don't remember hearing a great public outcry for a folding BlackBerry, RIM is clearly looking to cover all bases.

Expect more to filter through on this over the coming months...
