While we won't rule out an Android handset at HTC's big 6 May launch it actually looks increasingly like this will be the main attraction...

The HTC Touch 'Diamond' - one of the first Windows Mobile 6.1 handsets - is being reported as the star of the show by the Taipei Times. Speaking yesterday to investors, HTC financial executive Cheng Hui-ming rather gave the game away for the much rumoured handset when he referred to it by name before describing it as "the most important product for HTC this year". Cheng also when on to say HTC believes the model will be the main catalyst behind its anticipated 20 per cent annual growth during 2008. No pressure then.

So what does the Diamond offer up?

Apart from the revised OS, you'll find 7.2Mbit HSDPA connectivity, a zippy 528MHz Qualcomm CPU, a 2.8in VGA display, WiFi, GPS (assisted or true unknown), Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, a 3.2MP camera, 4GB of internal memory with a microSD expansion slot, an accelerometer and FM radio. As for the dimensions, it's no fatty either measuring just 51 x 99 x 10.7mm making it slimmer than an iPhone. WM 6.1's improved virtual keyboard (it couldn't get much worse) also means HTC has been able to shelve the bulky physical Qwerty.

Yes it's a tantalising spec - as many WM based phones are - but inevitably the proof will be in the design around it. Naturally, we'll be at the HTC event so expect the skinny from me soon afterwards...
