The painful limitations of Windows Mobile are obvious to all, but my word E-TEN does a good job of working around them...

The HTC pretender - recently acquired by Acer for a bargain £145.3m - is hitting the high notes today with a pair of crackers in the shape of the M750 and M810.

Looking to succeed where the M800 was such a near-miss, the duo both start well with funky makeovers and upgraded Qwerty keypads and continue with zippy 500MHz CPUs, WiFi, GPS, built in Java support and Bluetooth 2.0. The M810 meanwhile differentiates itself from its sibling with HSDPA connectivity (the M750 is limited to EDGE) while on the downside the pair have 2MP autofocus cameras (3.2MP should surely now be par for the course) and QVGA resolutions (VGA is where it's at these days) on their 2.8in touchscreens, but neither is terminal.

As is typical for Qwerty smartphones, size is not their strong point (both measure 109.5 x 59 x 17.5mm and weigh 179g), though anyone who is interested in such a device knows this is part of the package.

Release dates and pricing have yet to be announced for either model, but expect news shortly from long term partners like Expansys. Furthermore, with Acer now pulling the strings and offering up its financial might expect this funky twosome to be just the tip of the iceberg...
