What good are 250Mbps mobile broadband speeds without the hardware to attain them?

Stepping up to the plate this week is long-time Sony partner Ericsson which has announced the world's first LTE (Long Term Evolution) or 'Super 3G' (as it more is commonly known) mobile platform: the 'M700'.

Designed in terms of size and power consumption to measure up with existing 3G platforms currently available, M700-based products will initially be peripheral based such as laptop modems, Express Cards and USB modems rather than dedicated Super 3G handsets. These devices will be capable of 100Mbps download and 50Mbps upload speeds - quite enough given the real world drop-off expected from Super 3G.

The M700 is a flexible platform too supporting bandwidths between 1.4 and 20MHz and can support up to six band, including 700MHz, making it viable across the globe.

"This world-first launch marks a milestone in Ericsson's technology leadership and reflects our commitment to developing LTE as an evolutionary path," said Robert Puskaric, Ericsson Head of Mobile Platforms. "It is set to boost operators' service offering and provide consumers with a superior experience with full service broadband on any device, anywhere, at any time.

Samples of the M700 will be made available this year with commercial release targetted for 2009 in time for the release of end user products in 2010 - when Super 3G is expected to launch.

Fixed line broadband, live in fear...
