While 3G has come a long way from its humble roots the future is 'Super 3G'...

Following on from successful tests in November last year of 100Mbps mobile downloads, Japan's infamously stringent NTT DoCoMo has announced it has successfully completed real world testing of Super 3G managing to hit an incredible 250Mbps.

Conducted in an actual wireless environment near its R&D labs in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo, the test involves four Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas for base-station transmission and mobile-station reception in the 20MHz bandwidth, the maximum under new Super 3G standards. Naturally enough, this number will shrink on a crowded network, but we're starting from a stunningly high bar!

Now for those who can't be bothered to click on the link above the uninitiated, Super 3G is an evolution beyond the High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) standards currently in use today. It is also known as Long Term Evolution (LTE) and core specifications for its standardisation are being approved by overseer the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as we speak.

Before you get too excited however take a closer look at the graph, I'll wait...

Yep, we'll be waiting around three years.
