I'm a big fan of E-TEN, it's products over the last 18 months have really caught the imagination now it is already off to a good start in 2008.

This week the company has announced the 'X650' - a Windows Mobile 6 based smartphone with a large 2.8in VGA (640 x 480) resolution touchscreen that looks set to cause main rival HTC more than a few sleepless nights.

Behind this stunning facia things are just as impressive too with X650 sporting integrated GPS, a two megapixel camera with autofocus, WiFi, Bluetooth, 256MB of onboard memory and an FM tuner - a rare site on a WM based handset.

One downside for the - admittedly midrange focused - model is the lack of 3G connectivity, but EDGE is there and with a powerful battery that offers six hours talk time and up to seven days on standby there is compensation to be had. Furthermore, E-TEN has managed to keep the X650 reasonably portable with dimensions of 107mm x 58mm x 14.7mm and an iPhone matching weight of 135g.

No pricing or availability details have been revealed but E-TEN says it will be sold in black and purple colour variants. Personally, I wouldn't expect the X650 to arrive much beyond Q1 since all this tech is already well within the company's grasp.

HTC, it's going to be a challenging year…
