If you don't use GPS technology there are probably only two main reasons why:

1. You were born with a sense of direction.
2. You refuse to put up with all that tedious satellite-fixing malarkey

Thankfully, if you fit in the latter category (and consequently resent those in the first), SiRF - manufacturer of the ubiquitous SirFstar III GPS chip used in virtually everything - has come up with a vital breakthrough.

'SiRFInstantFixII' is the rather literal name given to new technology which the company claims can reduce the 'time to first fix' (TTFT) of GPS devices to as little as five seconds, without requiring any network connectivity for assistance or updates. This is a vast improvement over older systems where each satellite takes approximately 30 seconds to broadcast its precise location and a minimum of three satellites are needed to attain an accurate location lock.

"Our groundbreaking SiRFInstantFixII technology makes the frequent start-up waits for PNDs a thing of the past," said Kanwar Chadha, founder and VP of marketing for SiRF Technology. "By not requiring any network connectivity or downloads, it significantly improves the daily navigation experience for consumers of mobile navigation devices."

Perhaps the best news of all in this is that SiRFInstantFixII is designed to work with existing SiRFstarIII GPS receivers and SiRFatlas and SiRFtitan processors meaning almost everyone should be able to benefit. Making us jump through a few hoops though, SiRF says all customers using these chips should contact SiRF representatives for pricing and more information.

Proactive types off you go. The rest of us will just wait for TomTom, Garmin, Navman, Mio, Michelin, etc to do the hard work for us…
