Ever since the arrival of the iPhone's much (and rightly) vaunted multi-touch interface, consumers and hardware manufacturers have wanted far more from Windows Mobile. The latter group has even tried to fix things itself (with miserable results), but the winds are about to change.

Engadget this week admitted that it was one of the lucky US publications given the chance to witness a secret (and strictly NDA-ed) demonstration of the next version of Windows Mobile. We're not into WM7/Photon territory here but instead the arguably more anticipated (and necessary - just look above!?!) interface overhaul.

According to the prolific bloggers, "Our first impressions: very slick, and has a lot of features that just about any WinMo user will agree is way overdue. In other words, we're expecting users will be stoked -- no doubt about it."

Being held at legal gunpoint sadly stops Engadget from going into further detail but it did reveal the reworking should appear within the next four months. On a more cautious note it was stressed "iPhone users won't be swayed, but WinMo users will be stoked for some of the new stuff!" so perhaps we should temper our expectations a little. Furthermore, the team were told what they saw "is an update, not an upgrade" which suggests existing WM6 users are unlikely to be able to patch their handsets.

That said, with multi-touch having showed developers the light and Google looking to muscle into the mobile OS market with Android the pressure is certainly on for everyone else to up their game and it looks like Microsoft is already playing...
