Should there be an amorous - if unlikely - evening spent between the venerable Nokia Communicator and Apple's hipper than thou iPhone their children would turn out something like this...

The LG 'Voyager' (also known as the 'VX10000' - left) is a surprisingly good hybrid of the two with its Finnish daddies' form factor and sexy mummies' UI. Away from its lawyer-ific styling however is what turns out to be a highly impressive spec list that steals some of the best features of both.

The Voyager swipes the Qwerty keyboard and 3G connectivity from the Communicator and strips the interface from the iPhone while offering a 2.8in 400 x 240 pixel touch screen display, 2MP camera, QVGA video recording, support for audio and video playback and a microSD/SDHC slot for memory expansion. On the downside Bluetooth is only v1.2 with no A2DP so wireless music streaming isn't an option and the decision to install a 2.5mm headset jack rather than the standard 3.5 incher was daft.

At 118 x 54 x 18mm and weighing in at 133g, the Voyager is reasonably compact for a smartphone and having been batted around the web rumour mill for some time it is good to see the official handset living up to the hype.

Perhaps surprisingly, the Voyager comes to the US first (with Verizon) but a UK launch cannot be far away.

In related news, the company formerly known as Lucky Goldstar has also announced the 'Venus' (above, right) - a music centred slider with GPS and curious split screen display of which the bottom 1.49 inches is touch sensitive and the top two inches above it aren't. It's either madness or genius but at this moment in time I'm not sure which.

Other details were few and far between but expect this to become more solid in a week or so as it is set to be fast-tracked onto the market in time for Chrimbo. 'Tis the season to buy a new handset...
