There may have been no 'Gphone' in Google's grand announcement of its open source Android mobile platform yesterday, but now we know all about it...

Forbes has dished the dirt on a prototype Android handset already built by Google to attract members. It is known internally as the 'Dream' and is described as "somewhat like Apple's iPhone: It is thin, about 3 inches wide and 5 inches long, and features a touch-sensitive, rectangular screen".

Separating it from Apple's much vaunted multi-touch interface however is that the Dream is also time sensitive, responding to how long a finger is held on the screen. Holding it by default causes the display to zoom in. Further separating it from the iPhone is a physical slide out keyboard and some navigational controls near the base of the handset.

Email, text documents, multimedia functionality and an advanced web browser are also built in, with the last of these automatically splitting large downloads into chunks to compensate for any potential loss of signal.

Most intriguing of all however is that HTC is said to be so impressed by the Dream that it plans to release its own version of the phone with the first wave of Android handsets in the second half of 2008.

So the Gphone does - kind of - exist, though in reality this is no longer about one handset but potentially millions...
