It official! The next major battleground for mobile phones is their screens...

With cameras up to a comfortable five megapixels and 3G connectivity, video and audio playback commonplace on most high end handsets we now want large, beautiful touchscreens.

This week Samsung has announced it will begin production of the world's first 3.08in, 800 x 480 (WVGA) OLED displays and I, for one (of millions), absolutely cannot wait.

Previously, OLED mobile displays had been handicapped to QVGA and following a tech breakthrough inconjunction with Clairvoyante Inc (the science: called 'PenTile', eliminates one third of subpixels while maintaining the same resolution) this is no longer a problem. In fact, the specs behind the new screens are fabulous with Samsung quoting a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 100 per cent full NTSC colour gamut, 200cd/m2 brightness and ultra low power consumption of just 400mW.

Samples of these stunners will arrive in Q1 2008 with mass production coming in early Q3 '08 meaning the first 3in OLED mobiles aren't likely to appear before late Q4 '08/Q1 '09. All of which means you can safely upgrade you mobile one more time before these bad boys arrive, but you need to upgrade now...

FYI Clairvoyante is based in Cupertino and Samsung is already the largest supplier of flash memory to Apple. Just sayin' ...
