Just last week the first WiFi Blackberry was spotted undergoing its tests at the FCC so it hasn't taken long to pop out...

Dubbed the Blackberry '8820' the handset is an incremental upgrade to the already superb 8800 and brings with it 802.11a/b/g goodness (a RIM first), GPS and UMA (a seamless switch between WiFi and cellular networks in calls). The handset also features a microSD/SDHC slot meaning it is compatible with future looking capacities all the way up to 32GB!

"The BlackBerry 8820 complements our carrier partners' cellular networks with the added ability to stay connected via Wi-Fi at home, through hotspots and corporate campuses," said Mike Lazaridis, RIM's President and Co-CEO.

Elsewhere the 8820 is an exact match both physically and spec-wise for the 8800 (pictured above) with Quad-band and EDGE connectivity (no 3G sadly), a QVGA (320 x 240) display, 1.3MP camera, Bluetooth 2.0, Qwerty thumbboard, integrated media player and 64MB of onboard flash memory.

US (iPhone) network AT&T has confirmed it will pick up the handset which is due for release in the next few weeks. A European launch for this svelte bundle of loveliness isn't yet confirmed but it's sure to appear before September is out.
