The Pearl – a phrase which, on the one hand, conjures terror at the thought of nine hours of Pirates of the Caribbean movies and, on the other, makes smartphone fans purr with joy. Weirdly enough, this latter group is amount to mix both emotions...

Specs for the Pearl's successor have already hit the web and while they will certainly thrill many, existing Pearl owners (original, above) may feel a bit miffed that they're on the technological scrap heap already.

The main reason for such (what would seem unreasonable otherwise) jealousy comes from the inclusion of high speed EV-DO/3G connectivity – which would make it the first Blackberry device to do so. Next, despite this addition, the 'Pearl 2' (for want of a better name) will apparently be a whole 8mm thinner and drop its weight by a remarkable 30 per cent. This would make the next gen handset just 8.5mm thin and 55g – a truly microscopic handset. On top of this the 1.3MP camera is said to have been upgraded to 2MP.

A Q4 release timeframe is also by all accounts in place, but the big question here has to be Is this too good to be true? As a natural cynic I'd have to say yes until I hear official word from Blackberry (who naturally refuses to comment on such talk). That said, perhaps now is the time for the cynic to become an optimist and start praying...
