We'll just write this off as a Motorola day...

Concluding our coverage of yesterday's official launches (we got sneak previews at 3GSM) is the grand unveiling of the Q's successor, the Q9.

Thankfully no longer called the 'Q q9', the Q9 continues the strong theme of these latest announcements: 3.6Mbps HSDPA. This rocket propelled connectivity is a great boost for any smartphone and the Q9 builds on this with a zippy TI OMAP 2420 processor with 96MB RAM – something Motorola claims gives the device "as much processing power pound for pound as many of today's PCs". At under 100g however it must be understood that there are a lot of lbs difference between the Q9 and your average desktop!

In keeping the smart form factor of its predecessor, the Q9 also retains a full Qwerty keyboard and now expands on its emailing capabilities with no less than eight messaging inboxes covering Hotmail, AOL, Gmail, Yahoo! and POP3/IMAP accounts. Windows Mobile 6 is also the OS of choice.

On the fun side, the Q9 comes with a 2MP camera which is also capable of capturing and playing back video at 15fps, plus support for audio files including MP3. Finally, there's Bluetooth, 256MB of memory onboard and the prerequisite microSD expansion slot but – perhaps surprisingly – not WiFi.

Italy will, once again, curiously be the launch country for the latest Q and will be available on networks this week. Those of us with slightly less impressive tans and less corrupt football leagues however will have to wait a few more months.
