With increasingly impressive competition out there it is always interesting to see what industry leader TomTom comes up with next though this move was rather predictable...

In an upgrade to its uber-popular ONE unit the 'ONE XL' dumps the 3.5in 4:3 display for a swanky 4.3in widescreener which is backed up with 32MB RAM and Bluetooth 2.0. As always the usual choice of maps (UK or Europe) will be available and a mountain of POIs while the real differentiator in this market: TomTom's clear mapping remains consistently excellent.

The ONE XL will hit the US in June for $400 with a global launch set to come a few weeks later.

In related news, the company has also announced updates to maps for existing customers. The changes add the latest roads, junctions, toll zones (incl. the expanded London Congestion Zone – boo hiss), extra house numbers and new POIs. Breakdown is as follows

US and Canada: €99.95
Regional maps (country of purchase): €39.95 - €59.95
Western Europe: €99.95
Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia: €59.95
Hong Kong – €39.95
Singapore – €39.95
South Africa – €99.95

As for new customers if you purchase a device before 15 June without these latest updates they will be available free. After this cross over period all new devices will come with the new maps preinstalled.

Oh and cult actor Gary Busey is the latest celeb to add his voice to TomTom's selection of vocal downloads. Weird.
