While TomTom may consider itself the ruler of the GPS roost ALK’s CoPilot Live software has been making significant strides and is just about to make another.

Following last year’s very well received CoPilot 6 the company has announced ‘CoPilot Live 7’ which will bring support for the new Windows Mobile 6 operating system as well as a graphically remastered interface and support for community forums.

Breaking down the graphics side of things what this amounts to is a more intuitive menu system with customisable skins and clearer full screen 2D and 3D graphics (which claim to pinpoint your location faster and more accurately). New text-to-speech voice commands also claim to pronounce words more accurately in any one of 12 different languages.

Another major boost with CoPilot 7 are the improvements made to the software’s desktop companion ‘CoPilot Central’. From here users can now download and share voices, routes and maps styles bringing a community feel to the product.

Like any good GPS software however CoPilot 7 hasn’t forgotten the basics with seven digit UK postcode recognition and full coverage of RoI, Spain, Portugal and Scandinavia, over one million Points of Interest and live traffic information. The ever useful preloaded database of speed cameras is also a welcome continuation.

Naturally all the maps have been updated to include such information as London’s expanded congestion zone (*spit*) and the package comes bundled with a GPS receiver (should your device not have one built in) and a car mount kit.

ALK has announced CoPilot 7 will ship with an RRP of £180 though it is likely to be bundled with new handsets by a number of networks since it has already found favour with the likes of O2 and T-Mobile in previous incarnations. End of March is the scheduled shipping date and I suspect CoPilot 7 will have no need to ask for directions on its way to stores.
