In all truth the snail-like roll out of WiMAX looks to have relegated the technology to HSDPA support act but that hasn’t stopped Samsung from showing off just how snazzy devices based on it can be.

It used 3GSM to show off two mobile devices – the P9000 and M8100 – and a WiMAX USB dongle. The first is a real crowd puller based on the UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) design and squishes a 5in display, fold out keyboard, Windows XP OS, 1GHz CPU, 256MB RAM, WiMAX chip, CDMA EV-DO and 1.3MP camera inside an ultra portable 143 x 94 x 29.7mm body that weighs just 583g.

Granted it isn’t as powerful as most some UMPCs out there but it is certainly different.

By contrast, the M8100 is far more typical being built around a slider handset design and boasting a 2.8in screen, 2MP camera with VGA cam for video calls, Bluetooth with A2DP and 128BM ROM/64MB RAM memory. Where it makes use of WiMAX however is in its integrated Terrestrial-Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) chip which is capable of streaming high quality television signals as well as other data services.

Finally the company displayed the most compact WiMAX USB dongle I’ve seen yet and one which looks perhaps the most market ready. Like a 3G or wireless g dongle it simply plugs into a USB1.1 or USB2.0 port, installs and provides your devices with WiMAX functionality.

Sammy was marketing all three devices as more conceptual than real world but you can guess the distribution of WiMAX has more to do with this than any production drawbacks. I can almost hear the sniggers from HSDPA as we speak…
