Sony has just passed us deets for its latest UMPC, the surprisingly desirable ‘UX1’.

Looking identical to previous incarnations – the UX50 and UX90 – the UX1 is actually lighter than both models coming in at 480g (verses 520g and 492g respectively) and features an enlarged 32GB solid state hard drive.

Elsewhere the UX1 is the first UMPC I’ve seen to ship with Windows Vista (Business Edition) and with 1GB of RAM backed up with an Intel ULV processor it should do Microsoft’s next gen OS justice too.

As for the display, this is a large 4.5in touch screen which boasts Sony’s X-Black technology and is illuminated by LEDs to improve brightness and save power. The slide out keyboard is also illuminated with a blue backlight for use in low light conditions.

All your usual UMPC connectivity is in there with WiFi, Bluetooth and USB ports while there’s also fingerprint recognition. A docking cradle is bundled that adds three extra USB ports along with AV-out, VGA, LAN and iLINK. An AC adapter, stylus, carrying stand and soft case also come in the box.

Sony declined to give out a price or anticipated release date for the UX1 but it’s certainly the most appealing UMPC I’ve seen to date. Then again, you need only attach a shoulder strap to a type writer to enter the top five…
