HTC has easily been my favourite smartphone company in the last 18 months and it looks like its set to win my heart again in 2007…

Leaked on the T-Mobile Germany website is a stunning device the network is calling the ‘Ameo’ but most HTC fans will already know it as the ‘Athena’. This PDA/UMPC/smartphone hybrid is a powerhouse of performance and features with a fantastic 5in VGA display, 8GB HDD, HSDPA connectivity and an XScale processor that races along at 624MHz.

Elsewhere you’ll find WiFi, onboard GPS, a 3MP camera, Bluetooth and a miniSDHC compatible expansion slot. The inevitable downside is size with the Ameo weighing in at a hefty 355g (still not bad considering you’ve UMPC level performance here).

Being HTC, Windows Mobile is at its core but we don’t yet know if it will be running ‘Crossbow’ - the next gen mobile OS Microsoft plans to tie in with Vista. Given the leak it seems safe to suggest we’ll be seeing the Ameo appear in the next few weeks and I’d suspect T-Mobile has inked an exclusive deal for its first months of life.

Heaven knows what the cost of the Ameo will be – with or without a contract – but I’d suggest that if you’re pockets are deep enough (and wide enough) almost any figure will most likely be worth it…
