GPS certainly isn’t a new market but Nokia has decided it has something to bring to the mix.

The ‘330 Auto Navigation’ is a budget orientated system which marks the company’s first attempt at a dedicated device. The 330 runs on Windows CE, uses the well established SiRF Star III GPS chipset and sports a 3.5in 65k 320 x 240 colour touch screen, not the largest on the market but not the smallest.

A 400MHz Samsung S3C2440 CPU is at the 330’s heart and there’s the standard 64MB RAM, 64MB ROM memory allocation. A 2GB microSD card ships with the device and contains Route 66’s Navigate 7 software as well as UK, Ireland and European maps. A built in speaker is also present to provide spoken instructions and – like so many GPS units on the market today – it can double up as an digital audio, video and photo player.

Visually and technically there is little to separate the 330 from an already overcrowded market, but the friendly 306 euro price tag tells you exactly how Nokia plans to attract attention. It’ll hit shops before the end of the year; the only challenge will be in training your eyes to spot something so bland on shop shelves.
