With all the recently hullabaloo about remote TV control and access generated by the likes of Slingbox and Sony’s LocationFreeTV Sky has decided to fight back with a completely free alternative.

Rupert Murdoch’s broadcast giant is today launching the ‘Sky+ Remote Record’ service which enables subscribers to record their favourite programmes from either a mobile device or, imminently, via the Sky.com website.

The former can work in two ways. The first is via downloading the company’s ‘Skybymobile’ application which pulls down Sky’s seven day TV guide then navigates in exactly the same manner as your digibox’s menu system: the service itself is free, but remember to take into account your network’s data charges. As for the second method, simply text programme details to a dedicated number (61759) and the recording is set.

Loosely described as coming ‘this summer’ Remote Record will also be available via the web, once again with the seven day programme guide recreated on screen and a user’s selections sent to their box once confirmed.

In all, I love the idea of this service though naturally the proof will be based entirely on how effectively it works in a real world environment. I just wish I’d had this back in December when three months of hardship reporting from the golden beaches of Rio and Bahia did mean I missed around 60 episodes of Home & Away ;)
