I’m not sure what is more unusual about Sony’s UX series: the fact that it actually makes a UMPC look good or that the company is citing upgrades before its out?

Today the King of Proprietary emulated Samsung by announcing the ‘UX90’, a boosted version of the UX50, with 16GB solid state hard drive and integrated digital TV tuner.

While watching tele on the go undoubtedly has appeal to many it is probably the former improvement which will set tongues wagging the most. Unlike Samsung however, Sony has come straight out providing a set of specific numerical improvements this will provide. For a start the device’s weight drops 29g to 492g while battery life receives a nice 13 per cent boost.

Even more useful though are impressive performance claims with the company stating Microsoft Outlook, for example, now loads in just 1.5 seconds compared to nine seconds using the standard moving parts HDD. The downside is capacity drops from 30GB to 16GB with flash memory but encouragingly the price for either option remains the same.

These improvements aside, the UX90 remains identical to the UX50 with a 4.5in SVGA (1024 x 600) touch screen, Intel Core Solo 1.2GHz Ultra Low Voltage processor, 512MB of RAM, integrated graphics with 128MB of memory, and a 1.3MP camera and second 0.3MP camera (for video calls). A slew of connectivity options include WiFi, Bluetooth, EDGE, VGA, Ethernet, FireWire, 3x USB2.0 and AV out ports and a biometric fingerprint reader for the security conscious. Like the UX50, July remains the anticipated release date with prices circa $1,800.

The UX90 almost makes me believe in the UMPC concept… almost.
