It’s been nine months since O2 launched the UK’s first i-mode service and that’s a whole seven years behind Japan. So Sony Ericsson can officially declare itself outrageously late to the party having just announced its first 3G capable i-mode handset.

The K610im is a stereotypical SE candy bar and packs a two megapixel integrated camera with funky landscape shooting mode and the obligatory secondary VGA shooter for video calls. The screen itself is 1.9in and sports 262k colours but has a disappointingly low 176 x 220 resolution. 16MB of onboard memory is stingy too but a slot for Sony’s newish Memory Stick Micro (M2) format at least means this can be substantially boosted.

GSM 900/1900.1900 and UMTS networks are supported along with the headlining i-mode service and Bluetooth and Bluetooth Stereo (A2DP). Media player software for the usual array of mainstream audio and video formats and a flight mode fill things out a little but given that the dimensions are extremely compact at 102 x 45 x 17mm and the weight is a mere 89g this may explain why the specs are also a little on the flat side.

Currently listed as ‘coming soon’ on the Sony Ericsson UK website, the K610im is expected to ship within the next month on O2’s i-mode network. There were no hints on price but I’ll place a bet on the lives of traffic wardens all over the globe that it will be really, really expensive on the vast majority of monthly contracts.

And by ‘really, really expensive’ I mean FREE, because after two £50 tickets in the last three weeks I really hate those *&$%@#!$.
