Yup, the handset previously formerly known as the W850i is in fact the W900i, which sadly drives a rather large stake through the heart of that tasty little clamshell mock up. Not to worry though, because the bonafide W900i is a rip snorter in its own right.

Unlike the first two Walkman branded phones this 109 x 24 x 49mm, 148 gram model is 3G (with built in UMTS) and as such supports over-the-air music downloads. It’s got a two megapixel, auto focus camera capable of video captures at a cracking 30fps, the QVGA, 262k colour screen looks a beauty and the twisting format - popularised by the S700i (thanks for the wake-up slap Cameron) - should appeal to many.

There’s 470MB of built in storage, which is expandable thanks to a Memory Stick Duo slot (so limited thanks then) and it plays MP3, AAC, AAC+, WAV and XMF music formats. The 3.5mm headphone jack is refreshingly un-proprietary meaning you’ll be able to plug in your own, though (*shock, horror*) the supplied set – with their built in remote control and isolation styling – look surprisingly decent. Even scarier is news that the dreaded Sony software might even be user friendly since it works via drag and drop.

An FM radio, Java and Bluetooth round off an already impressive feature set and if you’re very, very good Santa may just be able to bring you one in time for Christmas. Pricing is going to be heavily network and contract dependant, so start writing your wish lists now…
