Motorola Shows Off "Q": A Super Slim, 115g Smartphone

Still suffering saliva overload and a wicked case of eyestrain from our article on the upgraded RAZR last week? Your condition is only going to get worse now Motorola has unveiled the Q.

By far the thinnest (117 x 64 x 12mm) and lightest (115g) smartphone we’ve seen to date, the Q is a veritable goody bag of svelte loveliness. It’s wide, landscape orientated 2.4in, 320 x 240 pixel, 65k colour display should be ideal for showing off Windows Mobile 5.0 which can be navigated either via its QWERTY keyboard (made up of electro-luminescent keys) or a thumbwheel (no word on a stylus).

Piccies and videos are ably handled by a 1.3 megapixel camera, while there is media support for MP3, WMA, AAC, Jpeg, H.263, WMV and Mpeg4 files, amongst others. Connectivity options include Infrared, USB and Bluetooth, but sadly no wireless (can’t have everything I suppose). That said, a miniSD card expansion slot is fitted so there is the potential to fit a wireless adaptor, though you’ll probably want to use it to throw in some high capacity storage.

Rounding things off nicely is a battery life proclaiming 200 minutes of talk time and up to 200 hours on standby. Due out in Q1 2006, I may just have found my next phone…

Incidentally, Ron Garriques, Motorola’s mobile devices president, was in an understandably cocky mood: “Wickedly cool — when’s the last time you heard those words used to describe a QWERTY device? Probably never. At least until now.” Don’t you just hate it when these people are right?
