Need a new smartphone? Orange has got one for you, it has just launched the highly anticipated SPV C550.

The Windows Mobile based tri-band phone will be rolled out nationwide this month and will be free on selected tariffs. The brushed aluminium handset has a 1.3 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, 64MB of internal memory (plus MiniSD card slot), multimedia functionality including support for MP3, AAC, WAV and Mpeg4 formats, Bluetooth and Infrared.

The C550 is surprisingly light at just 107g, yet still manages to cram in a 4.58 x 3.66cm, 320 x 240 pixel, 65k colour screen. Orange says talk time is approximately four hours and it lasts six days on standby (a good amount for a smartphone). Once you get a hold of one of these fellas you’ll also get access to the Orange World portal which has over 300,000 songs available for download, the company’s PacketVideo service, Back Up system and attachment compatible email server.

In related news, Orange’s M500 smartphone shouldn’t be too far behind the C550. It comes in a PDA form factor instead of the C550’s candybar styling, but otherwise shares similar features. Readers interested in the C550 can order it now from the Orange website, while the M500 is still described as “Coming Soon”.
