You’d expect if anyone was going to challenge Apple’s dominance in the MP3 player market then it would be Sony. Strangely, you’d be wrong, the otherwise imperious electronics giant has, so far, failed to deliver a killer product with either it’s first or second generation attempts. This has left the floor open to other pretenders to challenge the white fetishist and no one has grasped the opportunity better than Creative.

Furthermore, Creative has now announced price cuts across the board to try and exert further pressure on the mighty fruit. Starting immediately all Zen Micros (above) will fall forty quid to £149.99 including VAT, with the Zen Touch (below) 20GB and 40GB models shedding £20 to £179.99 and £229.99 respectively.

Of course, this move has not come solely out of the goodness of Creative's heart, indeed it will be fuelled by Apple's decision to reduce the RRPs of its iPods in February while at the same time shaking up its mini and photo ranges. As such, Creative hasn’t announced any radical redesigns of either model here, but we did spot a larger 20GB version of the Micro laying low on its website in March while Lars sniffed out some with colour screened micros at CeBIT.

Anyhow, since we first got our hands on the Micro back in December we’ve been big fans of the Zen range. We like our iPods too, but – as always – the more quality players in market the better.

Let’s toast to these two keeping their little price war going until they are just about giving them away. Then lets make them give em away!
