Belgian wireless technology developer Option has today added what it claims to be the world’s first five band wireless card to its product offerings.

Belgians are notoriously logical people, so the pleasantly literal name of the GlobeTrotter 3G Quad leaves you in no doubt as to its functionality. In a nutshell, Option claims the card will work with 3G UMTS at 2100MHz for the European, Middle East and Asian markets (EMEA), while the quad band GPRS 850/900/1800/1900MHz will cover the rest of the world. Should any updates need to be made to the card with time, it also comes equipped with on-board user upgradeable Flash memory.

We have seen a trend in recent weeks for multi-band data cards, much as we saw with phones a few years previously. Notably, Sony had its GC95 on show at 3GSM but its network range is not so large.

Back to the GlobeTrotter. Like all current 3G cards, it is powered via a Type II PC Card slot and its flexibility is not just confined to its all encompassing range of networks as it supports Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.

Bundled with the card is GlobeTrotter Mobility Manager, the software programme which helps the card roam seamlessly from one signal band to another. Don’t expect to see the Option brand in shops, however, as in the UK it sells direct to mobile network operators and is currently in discussions with all of them. So if you notice your provider suddenly offering world wide 3G data card coverage in the next few months, chance is it’s via a GlobeTrotter.
