3GSM First Day Madness Continues

The first day rush at 3GSM continues as manufacturers struggle to push their handsets into the limelight at the expense of rivals. These are some of the more interesting/quirky devices that caught our eye.

One company with a better chance of getting attention than many is Motorola with its RAZR upgrade, the SLVR V8. This fantastic looking phone includes Edge, Bluetooth, MiniUSB and Push to Talk connectivity plus a VGA camera and two inch, 176 x 220 pixel, 262k display. MPEG-4 video recording and playback is included as well as a built in speakerphone. Battery life is touted as up to 17 days on standby with potentially 6 hours of talk time. Total weight, just 85g. We loved the RAZR (of which, incidentally there will be a special edition in black due out any moment), we could love this even more.

The award for the most aptly named phone of the day goes to the PEBL, possibly the roundest and smoothest phone ever. Motorola’s “unique” claim is that users the opening mechanism allows users to operate and open the phone one handed, which sounds like every mobile phone on the market to us. Still, if you want to walk around with this tri-band phone with integrated Bluetooth and 5MB memory that says “is that a PEBL in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?” you can check it out, to use Motorola’s precise terminology: “soon”.

Samsung is making a good impression too, with the latest edition to its Series 60 smartphone, the D720. Powered by the Symbian Series 60 operating system, this slide open phone is just 110g yet features Triband and GPRS Class 10, support for MP3, AAC and AAC+ music formats, a one megapixel camera and a 262k, 176 x 208 pixel display. Looks good to us.
