A cover for a Kindle or any tablet or ereader for than matter should really convey a sense that it is going to keep your device safe, no matter what.
The Maroo Koto case for the Kindle 3 does just that. It feels solid, holders the Kindle in place securely and just seems to say: “Don’t worry mate, I’ll take care of your ereader, you just sit back and relax.”
Unlike most other Kindle covers, the Maroo Koto does not open like a book, but flips open vertically like a notebook. The outside is made of black padded leather which gives the case a solid but soft feel.
The case is kept closed by two black elastic straps on the bottom corners and on the read you’ll find a black plastic flap which is used to prop the Kindle up in two different viewing angles.
The front of the case is made up of two sections which allows you to fold it over and put the bottom of the front cover into the plastic flap, creating a wedge to let you read hands free. This can also be flipped up to so that your Kindle is standing at almost 90 degrees. This mechanism works well and the Kindle feels secure when wedged in these positions.
The Kindle is kept in position at the four corner by what Maroo call SG Bumpers which aim to protect your Kindle if it’s dropped – even in the open position. What it won’t do however, as we found out to our chagrin is protect the screen from a direct strike – but then again no case for the Kindle promises this.
On the opposite side of the inside you’ll find a flap for storing business cards and the like, as well as a large elastic band into which you can slip your hand while reading.
Verdict
The Maroo Koto is one of the nicest Kindle cases we have seen. It feels nice, offers decent protection for your ereader and even allows for hands-free reading. It may not use real leather but the Koto feels like a premium case and represents decent value for its £29.99 price tag.
