Though notebooks keep getting cooler and more efficient, sometimes having one sat on your lap is still uncomfortable. This is not only due to heat build-up, but also because the weight or the position of a notebook on your lap is simply not ideal when working for long periods of time. This is where the Comfort Lapdesk from Logitech comes in. Similar in purpose, if not appearance, to the Belkin CushTop, it’s an ergonomically designed desk that sits on your lap – just as the name suggests, really.

There are essentially two parts to the Comfort Lapdesk: the hard plastic “desk” section and the soft padded cushion section. Made from a breathable material, the cushion section is contoured to create a comfortable working position when using your notebook – encouraging you to sit up straight and not slouch over your keyboard. This contoured shape also ensures there’s open space between your notebook and your lap, allowing air to flow through and keep your lap cool and comfortable.

Up top, the desk segment is angled at twelve degrees, which proves to be a far more comfortable viewing angle – helping you to sit up straight and not strain your neck. This desk surface is also made from a hard lacquered plastic (like a real desk), ensuring your notebook won’t slip around and aiding good air flow underneath it, too.

All this ergonomic design makes for very comfortable use when sitting down on a sofa or chair away from the desk. We happily sat down and typed away for over an hour, never feeling that we were too hot or getting stiff necks or backs. It’s also pleasing to discover that the Lapdesk is large enough to support notebooks up to seventeen inches in size, so only the very largest of desktop replacements need not apply.

Another useful feature of the design is how, when not in use, it’s very easy to stow away discreetly. This is because it stands vertically on its own, so you can tuck it away by the side of a sofa, chair or bed and it not get in the way. You could, of course, also slide it underneath any of these, since it’s not that big.

It helps, too, that aesthetically the Comfort Lapdesk should fit easily into any modern home. Its sleek white and grey shades are fairly neutral while its curvy shape is subtle and unobtrusive, so won’t draw attention to itself needlessly.

As useful as it is when sitting down, it’s just as useful (if not more so) when in bed. Using a notebook on a bed is always fraught with danger, since the vents and fans are always blocked, but with the Lapdesk this isn’t a problem. It also brings the added benefit of enhancing the viewing position, so you can happily lay back, notebook on lap, and enjoy a film, TV show or simply browse the Internet before nodding off.

Verdict

If you’ve ever found using your notebook on your lap uncomfortable, the £20 to £30 you’ll pay for the Logitech Comfort Lapdesk will be money well spent. It’s intuitively designed, discreet and helps keep you and your notebook cool with little discomfort.
