A company accustom to splashing its logo across a broad range of items in a bid to give the sense of grandeur, luxurious quality and high-end appeal, Ferrari has tackled the audio market, pairing with an industry specialist along the way to introduce the Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150 in-ear headphones.

Targeting the higher-end of the in-ear audio market, the Logic3 Ferrari T150s feature a hefty £185 price tag, some way off the £25 fee being charged for the new Apple EarPods, a pair of headphones that are set to be in abundance when paired with the new iPhone 5.

Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150 Design
With the Logic3 Ferrari collection split into two distinct sub-brands, the bold and brash F1 influenced Scuderia line, and the timeless GT road car infused Cavallino range, the Logic3 Ferrari T150s have taken a more demure approach to design. Falling under the Cavallino header, the T150s offer an aesthetically pleasing finish with a soft leather outer wrapped around a brushed metal and glossed plastic shell.

With many people likely tempted by the Ferrari branding, these Logic3 manufactured in-ear offerings will not disappoint on an aesthetical point, proudly brandishing the infamous prancing horse logo on each ear bud so as to leave no one left guessing which iconic brand’s wears you are proudly adorning.

Available in black or tan leather options, the Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150 in-ear headphones feature a woven fabric cable that whist visually appealing, and considerably nicer around the neck than a rubberised finish, has shown some slight signs of fraying following just a couple of week’s worth of use.  Although this has yet to spread into a performance depleting issue, it is something that should be monitored if splashing out on the T150s.

Despite boasting a selection of high-end brushed metal touches, the T150 design is, somewhat disappointingly, further let down on the design front by the plastic clad in-line mic and volume controls, a low-grade oversight that detracts from the otherwise impressive finish.

Forgoing the same over-the-top design characteristics of the Logic3 Ferrari Scuderia P200 over-ear headphones, the Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150’s have instead opted for a more muted and refined appearance that is sure to appeal to those less intent on being spotted, ie not someone who has ever considered a pair of Monster Beats Solo HD headphones, and more keen on understated elegance and performance.

In a bid to offer a comprehensive, well-rounded soundstage, the Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150s play host to a 10mm TFAT driver, with the Thin Film Acoustic Technology dynamic-balancing system helping to generate deeper bass levels over rival headphones within a wider frequency range. This frequency response range covers from 20-20,000Hz.

More than a simple pair of sportscar-branded earbuds, the Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150s feature an integrated in-line mic that is compatible with a selection of smartphone handsets including Android and Windows Phone devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Nokia Lumia 900 respectively. What’s more the latest BlackBerry offerings and the full collection of Apple iPhones are also seamlessly covered.

Comfortably positioned high-up on the right earbud’s cable for easy, fuss-free hands-free calling, the in-line mic makes it easy to increase and decrease playback volumes, as well as pause and play tracks without having to fish around in your pocket for your music-providing handset.

Ensuring maximum comfort when plugging your ears with relatively intrusive earbuds, Logic3 and Ferrari have paired the Cavallino T150s with five sets of varyingly sized silicone tips. Covering all bases, and personal preferences, the T150s see the standard trio of small, medium and large rounded tips line up alongside two pairs or large and small triple flange, Christmas tree tips.

Whilst the tri-tiered offerings are sure to appeal to some, in practise the elongated endings dramatically diminish the audio output of the Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150s, reducing the otherwise strong audio performance to a distant, flat and mild offering that fails to provide an appealing listening experience.

Helping make sure that these rather expensive in-ear headphones do not fall victim to damage whilst not in use, the Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150 audio enablers are packaged with a compact, fabric covered, hard-backed carry case. With a suitably soft interior and a mesh pocket for the additional tips, this sturdy storage option offers ample protection against all manner of knocks and bumps leaving you at ease even when throwing the sumptuously styled T150s to the bottom of a bag laden with hard-edged books and all manner of other items.

Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150 Fit
Whilst the Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150 headphones certainly look the part, unfortunately they are far from the most comfortable in-ear audio providers on the market.

Although the Ferrari branded earbuds are, despite their size, light enough to avoid unwanted weight-related tugging, the oversized nature of the headphones mean the bodies overpower the stubby tips, causing the leather wrapped, vertically aligned cable connection to rub on your earlobe.

Creating an uncomfortable, irritable fit, this can be easily counteracted by utilising the triple flange silicone tips provide. Sadly, however, this has a hugely negative effect on the audio performance creating a lose-lose catch 22 situation.

Despite this slightly irksome comfort issue, the Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150 in-ear headphones do an admirable jump at living up to their noise isolation billing, creating a perfect seal and removing all background noise leaving you free to enjoy your music in peace. What’s more, as well as keeping background noise out, the Ferrari buds keep your tunes in with little leakage even when hitting the highest volume settings.

Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150 Sound Quality
Where you would arguably expect a pair of high-end headphones to come into their own, sound quality, the Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150s fall on somewhat patchy ground. There is no denying that the T150s sound good, but the question as to whether they sound good enough to justify their sizeable price tag is a difficult one.

Thanks to the 10mm TFAT drivers the Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150 in-ear headphones do indeed offer full, warming bass, whilst the broad soundstage ensures both bass rich notes and lighter acoustic twangs are easily distinguishable and accomplished on the same tracks.

It is these lower and mid-range tones, however, where the T150s come slightly unstuck. Whilst bass rich tracks feel warm, well-rounded and full off a complete, balanced soundstage, when tackling acoustic led songs, the Ferrari buds produce unnecessarily sharp and aggressively abrupt results.

Removing the expected, normal tail off of notes, the Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150’s low-end sounds are cut short, with punchy tones axed before their natural conclusion, an effect that can give a slightly jilted, hollow and far from smooth flowing audio experience.

Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150 Verdict
Whilst there is an argument to be made that the Logic3 Ferrari Cavallino T150 in-ear headphones are a classic case of style over substance, in truth these largely impressive in-ear headphones are in fact let down by only a few, small, niggling issues. These minor oversights, however, are further emphasized by the earbud’s hefty price tag, a figure that has undoubtedly been exaggerated by the presence of that iconic Ferrari logo.

With a largely impressive audio performance and a selection of accessories and features that will help attune the T150s to all user wants and needs, there is no denying that these Ferrari adorned buds are strong on both style and substance fronts; if only they were a little cheaper.
