The touch pad is an Elan model. It also does support palm-registration.

The reviewer kept banging on about the design but glossy black is a classic and acceotable finish. In my opinion, this a classic and understated look for both home users and professionals who don't want a gaudy HP/Dell print.

For starters having the touchpad in the middle makes it equally difficult or easy for us left-handers.
And if it's a Synaptics pad then you can very easily tune accidental palm touches out in the driver. And have been able to for a number of years. The driver that enabled it appeared about a year into my ownership of a Dell Inspiton 7000. This had a PII-300 in it so quite a while ago. IIRC Alps' driver has a similar feature.
