Asus UX50V 15.6in CULV Laptop - Preview

TrustedReviews NewslettersMoving onto the guts of the machine, processing is handled by an Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500. Just because it's single core and runs at a lowly clock-speed of 1.4GHz though doesn't mean it's comparable to an Atom or equivalent; it's definitely quicker. This said, given the system is slated to cost around £999, we reckon Asus ought to be considering the dual-core version of the same CPU. Stylish or otherwise, that's a lot of money to pay for comparatively little processing performance.
Happily, the UX50V does have one further trick up its sleeve, since as well as mediocre Intel integrated 4500M HD graphics, Asus' slim laptop fits in an nVidia GeForce 105M with 512MB of dedicated RAM. Since both GPUs are instantly switchable, you can use the Intel integrated GPU while doing 2D work such as browsing the web or word-processing, which will give you maximum battery life. Then for demanding videos or CUDA-accelerated applications, simply activate the 105M, keeping in mind this will drain the battery faster and that to accelerate high-definition content you'll need compatible software. Gaming is pretty much out of the picture though, as the 105M would struggle even with undemanding titles.
Other specifications are impressive, with 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 320 - 500GB hard drive options, Draft-N Wi-Fi and Bluetooth v2.1+EDR. Our only potential concern with this well-presented machine is the battery. Though it is Lithium-Polymer rather than Lithium-ion, its 2,800mAh (41Wh) capacity still seems low despite the ULV processor. However, considering the surprisingly good battery performance of the 1008HA 'Seashell', we'll wait until we've put it through our tests before judging.
With availability in July and an estimated base price of £999, the Asus will be facing some stiff competition from other manufacturers, especially Acer's award-winning Timeline series. Based purely on style though, the UX50V is already a champion. Will this be enough to justify the price? Let us know what you think in the comments.
