1st Place: Canon PIXMA MP970

Canon really has a commanding place in the all-in-one inkjet market. Its whole range of multifunction machines provide excellent print at reasonable prices with good throughput speeds.

But there can only be one winner, so if you want an all-in-one with all the trimmings, Canon's MP970 has them in abundance. Twin paper trays, CD/DVD print, built-in duplex, seven inks for fine photo prints and a built-in transparency and negative scanner. It prints reasonably quickly - except when duplexing - and is cheap to run, a major plus for an inkjet.

Why the MP970 and not the recently released MP980? The asking price of the MP970 is below the magical £200 threshold and, more importantly, the cartridge set is a lot cheaper, giving much lower running costs. The prices of the MP980 inks will drop, but not this year.

2nd Place: Epson B-500DN

Several of the main inkjet makers are trying to move inkjet technology into the business market and the B500DN is a major step in that direction. This is a substantial machine with an ‘individual' look, but right from the start it wants to be taken seriously. It can take a whole ream of paper in its main tray and only needs new ink every 7,000 pages. While print speeds aren't as high as from equivalently-priced colour lasers, print quality is fair; excellent if you print photos. A colour page also costs under 3p, which is exceptional.

3rd Place: Canon PIXMA iP1900

A simple inkjet printer at an entry-level price may not be the most obvious choice for an annual award, but this little machine is supremely easy-to-use and produces very reasonable quality for anybody on a budget. The PIXMA iP1900 is not the fastest inkjet printer on Earth, but it produces over seven black pages a minute and around two and a half in colour, which is still respectable. It'll turn out a good quality 15 x 10cm print in under a minute, too. As a personal inkjet for correspondence and a few photos, it's a great choice.
