Having been gazumped by the 10in MSI Wind, Asus responded with its own 10in offering: the Eee PC 1000. Available in Linux and Windows (1000H) versions, the Linux version has a 40GB SSD and the Windows one a 80GB hard drive. Otherwise they're identical to the 901.

- More storage space on both models
The Bad:
- Poor keyboard layout
- Keyboard not as good as those on MSI Wind or Samsung NC10

- Linux version too expensive for less storage capacity
The Ugly:
- Windows version weighs a whopping 1.45kg. Take that portability!
What We Said
Linux Version - "Though excellent in almost every respect, the price is a little too dear given that the Windows XP version of the same machine will retail for £20 less and feature a larger hard drive. If you fancy the form factor over the 9in 901 and lust after SSD storage it will serve you exceedingly well, but at this price it's not the one we'd recommend buying."

Windows Version - "Asus has gone out of its way to make an Eee PC to suit every need and if you're after an everyday mobile computer, the Eee PC 1000H will suit many. Its larger keyboard makes it easier to use for adults, while its greater storage also provides the flexibility a more mature and demanding audience are after. It's only a shame the 1.45kg weight makes it bulkier than most, but on balance it's still the better of two 10in Eee PCs and until someone can match the battery life offered here it's probably the best netbook of its type, too." - Asus Eee PC 1000 Windows XP Full Review
What We Think Now
Given the presence of the MSI Wind and Samsung NC10, it is hard not to feel the Eee PC 1000 is the weak link in Asus' Atom powered netbook line-up. It's bulkier than its closest competition and though the keyboard is an improvement over the 901, that's hardly difficult and both its immediate competition offer better keyboards as well. Indeed, the only thing it still has is probably the best battery life, but even here its advantage is only slight.
The Bottom Line
A sensible option at the time, the Eee PC 1000 still represents decent value but there are other better 10in netbooks out there with more to come.

Very useful review - one question please: Can I replace the custom o/s with Ubuntu without losing any functionality?
