Office Program

Seeing as you ought to be spending a lot of time writing essays, an office program should be high on your priority list. Unfortunately, things don't come cheap. At least as a student you can get the Home and Student edition of Office 2007, which is available for £85 inc. VAT.

However this isn't ideal for a Student on a small budget, so if you can do without some features then it's well worth trying out Open Office, which is totally free. If all you're doing is essay writing then it does everything you need, and you can enjoy quite a few rounds on the money you save.

Speakers – Creative Gigaworks T20

Although space may be at a premium, that doesn't mean you can't enjoy decent sound. Ok, so a 7.1 set is probably out of the question, but for less than £50 you can get hold of Creative's superb 2.0 set, the Gigaworks T20s.

These received an Editor's Choice Award back in April, and are worth every penny. Small but powerful, they combine excellent sound production, convenience and style for a stupendously low price.

Monitor – Samsung 215TW

This may not be for everyone, but if you have games consoles or want something more substantial than a notebook display in your room then an LCD monitor may fit the bill. A native resolution of 1,680 x 1,050 is ideal, mainly because monitors with this resolution aren't too large and are more affordable than native 1,920 x 1,200 displays.

Our top pick at this resolution has to be the Samsung 215TW. When we first reviewed this it was retailing for an eye-watering £470, but can now be bought for the far too tempting price of £240 inc. VAT and delivery. When you consider it features D-Sub, DVI, component and composite connections along with superb image quality, it's a great investment and a good monitor such as this will keep you happy for years to come.
