The keyboard is reasonably user-friendly. It has full size Return and Backspace keys that really make typing at speed a more accurate experience. However, it’s not the best I’ve used with a noticeable and off-putting bounce to the whole keyboard. Key travel is not as deep as I would like either, but the action is positive enough to leave you confident that your strokes have been registered. Pointer manipulation is taken care of by a responsive and customisable touchpad with left and right click buttons situated above and below it. A Trackpoint set in between the G, H and B keys can also be used to move the pointer.
If you enjoy listening to music then you’ll be disappointed with the tinny pair of integrated speakers that reside above the keyboard. They really don’t do justice to the sound chip and I found that audio is far more acceptable when you use the headphone socket situated on the front next to the microphone jack. Between the speakers you’ll also find four programmable easy-access Internet buttons.
Connectivity-wise the N620c comes complete with an infrared port and two PC Card slots that can accommodate two Type II cards or a single Type III. If you wanted to, you could use a wireless PC Card adapter instead of the MultiPort, but don’t be surprised if your battery life falls dramatically. A look around the rear reveals a D-SUB connector, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, and a Gigabit Ethernet port. An integrated 56K modem can be found on the right side too, but I was quite disappointed to see no sign of FireWire, especially when you consider you’re spending over £2,000. A three-year worldwide warranty makes me feel a little better though and should give business travellers some piece of mind.
Verdict
The N620c is a portable notebook that offers a good level of build quality together with a choice of wireless connectivity that is easily changeable. By far the most impressive feature is the battery life that ultimately makes it a real prospect for working in the field. On the other hand, it’s not the cheapest unit at £2,153.78 before you’ve even selected a wireless option. That said, it is clearly aimed at the corporate market where bulk purchases are the order of the day.
