Thanks to the unavoidable added cost of its aluminium shell, the 13in MacBook Pro doesn't make the best entry level system. Which is why Apple has kept the White plastic MacBook in its line-up and, presumably, why the system is to be redesigned and updated in the coming months.

According to AppleInsider, "people familiar" with Apple's plans have confirmed that the system will be getting a visual overhaul. That's a good thing because, although the MacBook looked pretty swish when in launched back in 2006, its unibody, aluminium successor blows it out of the proverbial water.

That this refresh will come in the wake of Snow Leopard launching should be of no surprise. Further, as well as a redesign an upgrade to the MacBook's internals is likely, indicating the MacBook Pro range will also get an update to reaffirm its premium status.

Okay, so even with a slimmer, sleeker chassis, it's unlikely anyone able to afford a Pro will settle for the MacBook. However, there are plenty of Windows laptops that look as good, if not better, than the old model and I guess how many are put off the MacBook by its dated-ness, so the update will be welcome by all, I'm sure.

I think you might be right about the battery and slimmer design. An SD card reader might also be a possibility. It would be nice if they got better screens, but I think cost will ... more

I think it'd be nice if they gave them the iPod Nano treatment, and made them available in a range of vibrant colours. That seems to be working for the Dell notebooks now - with th... more
