Dell Inspiron 11z Launches

Customer feedback, says Dell, shows demand for a notebook-like system with netbook-like pricing and apparently that's exactly what the Inspiron 11z will prove to be. Far be it for us to draw conclusions, but coming mere days after Dell confirmed it was dropping the Mini 12, it's hard to see the launch as a coincidence. Luckily, I'm calling it a provident one, because in a laptop-sized machine - which this is and the mini 12 was - Atom really isn't up to scratch.
The system's name derives from the 11.6in LED-backlit display it features, which has a 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution. Internally a 1.2GHz Celeron 723 CPU runs the show, backed up by Integrated GS45 graphics, 2GB of RAM, and a 250GB hard drive. That's likely to provide a much better experience than any Atom-based systems could, in my opinion at least, provide.
A 3-cell, 28WHr battery provides three hours of use, says Dell, which isn't too bad - though more would always be better. Ethernet, Wi-Fi, HDMI and three USB ports make for a reasonable level of connectivity. There's no internal optical drive but Dell will happily add one, for a price.
The blog post implies the Inspiron 11z will be sold in Carphone Warehouse exclusively in the UK. No pricing as yet, but I'm going to take a guess that the $399 US starting price will translate to something like £279 over here.
