We've heard more than a few Apple Mac tablet PC rumours over the years, so it's hard to lend any much credence. Nonetheless, the Financial Times reckons to have sourced confirmation that a tablet PC will be forthcoming from Apple this September.

According to the FT's sources, "The new touch-sensitive device Apple is working on will have a screen that may be up to 10 inches diagonally." That the purported tablet will have Internet access isn't hard to believe, but the suggestion that there will be "access to Apple's online stores" is more interesting.

Although the reference could simply be to downloads from the iTunes Store, in iTunes, it's possible to think the tablet might not come with OS X, but instead with a custom interface as seen in the iPhone. The tablet being more an over-sized iPod touch, rather than an extra-portable, touchscreen MacBook, in that case. Unlikely, perhaps, but still possible.

It's hard to imagine a portable device form Apple not being multimedia friendly. According to 'one entertainment executive,' "it's going to be fabulous for watching movies." Likewise, the FT says book publishers are hoping to offer eBooks on an Apple tablet device, potentially offering a rival to Amazon's Kindle.

I'm still sceptical, but if Apple wants to prove me wrong, so much the better.
